The effect of hexamethonium upon cerebral blood flow and metabolism in patients with premalignant and malignant hypertension.

چکیده
In 13 patients with grade III or grade IV hypertensive retinopathy the effect of intramuscular hexamethonium bromide on cerebral circulation and metabolism has been studied. The results have been compared with Dewar's study of hexamethonium in less severe hypertensive patients and with Kety's results following differential spinal sympathetic block. Sixty minutes after in-tramuscular hexamethonium, mean arterial blood pressure fell 39 per cent, cerebral vascular resistance was reduced 29 per cent, and cerebral blood flow decreased 16 per cent. Cerebral oxygen consumption was maintained at the expense of a reduction in cerebral venous oxygen saturation. HE EFFECT of hexamethonium upon blood flow in various organs of hyper-tensive patients has been reported by several investigators. Cardiac output was reduced in compensated patients.' Renal blood flow decreased initially but returned to control value despite a continued reduction in arterial blood pressure.' 2 Blood flow through the abdominal viscera decreased in proportion to the fall in arterial blood pressure.3 The present report concerns the effect of hexa-methonium upon cerebral hemodynamics and metabolism in 13 patients with severe hyper-tension.

The blood flow and oxygen consumption of the brain in patients with essential hypertension before and after adrenalectomy.
It has been shown that cerebral oxygen consumption and blood flow are normal and cerebral vascular resistance is increased in patients with essential hypertension (1). Clinicians have questioned the advisability of lowering arterial pressures in hypertensive patients because of the possible untoward effects consequent to decreased cerebral blood flow (2, 3). We have studied the effect of hypote...
متن کاملI-46: Obstetrical Doppler
Accurate assessment of gestational age, fetal growth, and the detection of fetal and placental abnormalities are major benefits of sonography. Color Doppler can be used to assist in the identification of vascular architecture, detection of vascular pathology and visualization of blood flow changes associated with physiologic processes and disease states. The clinical applications of obstetrical...
متن کاملA survey of intracranial blood flow velocity in thalassemia intermedia in Khuzestan Province, Iran
Background: Beta-thalassemia intermedia (BTI) is a type of hemoglobinopathy with an increased risk of cerebrovascular accidents, and transcranial cerebral Doppler ultrasonography (TCD) through determining the mean cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) can serve to predict the risk of a developing stroke. This study aims to compare patients with beta-thalassemia intermedia and healthy individuals ...
متن کاملAbnormal cerebral blood flow in methamphetamine abusers assessed by brain perfusion single emission computed tomography
Introduction:Amphetamines are central nervous system (CNS) stimulant substances and amphetamine abuse is considered a growing problem in our country. Previous studies revealed destructive effects of amphetamines on metabolism, perfusion and structure of brain. The aim of current study was evaluating regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) disturbances in methamphetamine (MA) abuser...
متن کاملRole of Nitric Oxide and ATP-Sensitive K+ Channels in Regulation of Basal Blood Flow and Hypercapnic Vasodilatation of Cerebral Blood Vessels in Rabbit
Background: The mechanisms underlying cerebral hypercapnic vasodilatation are not fully understood. Objective: To investigate the role of nitric oxide (NO) and ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels in basal blood flow regulation and hypercapnia-induced vasodilatation in rabbit cerebral blood vessels. Methods: The change in cerebral blood flow was measured by a laser Doppler flowmeter in 18 Ne...
